Skimmia cheerful abundance of red, sparkling berries green leaves, shiny berries; On this skimmia you have an all -rounder that gives color in the fall and winter, green is in the spring and offers scented flowers in the late summer.
At your front door, in your back garden, next to your pumpkins and gourds, this skimmia (full skimmia japonica "Pabella") brings warmth and color immediately, wherever you put it down. The berries discolour from green to bright red in the fall. You can enjoy it for a long time, because, unlike other besenous plants, birds and small garden animals are not big lovers of the berries. The plant becomes a maximum of 100-125 centimeters high and can be done in the open ground as well as in pots, baking and tubs. If you put it in a pot, make sure you have sufficient drainage: too much moisture is one of the few things that Skimmia can't stand.
Skimma as Dutch Glorie Skimmia belongs to the wine window family (Rutaceae) that are also part of citrus trees. That kinship can be found in the leaves: if you brute it, a citrus scent is released. In the wild, Skimmia grows in the forests of China and other parts of Asia, such as the Himalayas. However, this beautiful berry carrier originated in a Dutch greenhouse. If you want the plant to thrive in your garden, you have to place a gentleman with a few ladies skimmia who can cause pollination. The male plant is best recognizable by its shape: the flowering is something more robust and the flowers have stampers.
Skimmia Trivia The first Skimmia came to Europe in 1838 and ended up in the greenhouses of Kew Gardens. The Latin name was derived from "Miyama Shikimi" in 1784, the Japanese term for Skimmia.
Care tips Skimma prefers to be in the shade, then the berries develop best.   The plant has a preference for a slightly acidic soil, such as rhododendrong round. If the leaves turn yellow, the soil is not acidic enough. Skimmia does not like wet feet and therefore likes to be the neighbor of trees, who absorb a lot of moisture from the bottom. Do not cut branches of the plant, that does not benefit the next flowering. Skimmia is fairly hardy, you only have to protect it in severe frost.
This Skimmia japonica is offered in the 5 cm cultivation pot, the height of the plant is approx. 45 cm.
